000_0003 Since opening, 1978 has offered a wonderful selection of art classes from beginner to advanced, for adults and children, from watercolor and sculpture to jewelry design and workshops on mask-making and pop-up books. With a kiln on premises, summertime clay workshops are offered. Classes during the year are scheduled for the fall and spring.

2009 FALL CLASSES and WORKSHOPS

Classes are 8 weeks long unless specified...most classes begin the 1st week in October… some starting dates may vary so call the teachers directly. Many programs are on-going with optional starting dates.

Photography Ages 10 - 15, Mondays  4:15 to 5:15 PM Fee $80. (This class is subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer scholarship fund...normally $160). Bring a digital camera or borrow one from 1978 ($50 deposit required and refunded when the camera is returned). Students will learn camera mechanics, composition, light, depth of field in the studio. The Contemporary Artists Forum:  Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, (every other Tuesday) Fee $50 for 8 sessions. First session, Sept 1.

The Contemporary Artists Forum is a critique group where serious artists discuss each others work andinfluencesfacing artists today. Group leader: Mikel Frank holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Pratt Institute. 201-306-1970

Art share…. Wednesdays, 7 to 9 PM. Fee $20 for 4 any sessions

sessions (this class is subsidized by the 1978 Educational fund…. normally $160)

Learn to discuss, describe and critique art currently on exhibit in
our gallery. Students will edit their work and may submit their

Illuminated Writing Workshop: Ages 9-12. Thursdays 5:45-6:45 PM. Fee
$160. for eight sessions.
Accent and illuminate your creative writing with your own 2-d art
work. Expression, editing and presentation skills will be encouraged.

Writing for College-Bound Teens:  Saturday, 9 to 10:15 AM. Fee $120. Ages 14 and older. A non-fiction, memoir-based writing class.  We will begin each class with fun exercises designed to prompt original topics about your most engaging subject:  YOU!  By the end of the course, each student will have composed several shorter pieces, as well as two to three longer ones which could serve as material for college essays.  The course is taught by English Education Instructor at the Teachers College of Columbia University, Berit Gordon. beritandrew@aol.com, 973-996-2077 . 

 

Cartooning:  Saturday, 10:30 to 12 noon, ages 12 and older. Fee $160 starting October 10. Join Maplewood resident professional artist and internationally-known cartoonist, Rick Parker. Subjects covered will be comics theory, comics history, materials and techniques, character creation, plot, pacing, dialogue, lettering, coloring, graphic storytelling, backgrounds, drawing animals, developing a style, insider tips and practical information. EXHIBITIONS

C.A.F.E. VIII … The Contemporary Artists Forum Exhibition returns in its 8th installment of work by artists who belong to this art critique group, which meets at the 1978 Maplewood Arts Center in the fall and spring. The exhibition features work by artist members whose work was discussed during the course of the previous year. You will see painting, sculpture, printmaking, photographer, digital imagery and more.

1978 Arts Café, open mic night. Music, spoken word and performances, from 7:30 to 10 PM (the show starts at 8PM). Join us for a night of creative expression. Bring your songs, poems, stories, plays and friends. Or just come to enjoy the show. The Arts Café is the 2nd Saturday of every month.
