000_0003 Since opening, 1978 has offered a wonderful selection of art classes from beginner to advanced, for adults and children, from watercolor and sculpture to jewelry design and workshops on mask-making and pop-up books. With a kiln on premises, summertime clay workshops are offered. Classes during the year are scheduled for the fall and spring.

CLASSES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

 

Cartoon and Comic Creations:  Ages 8 -14, July 7 to 11,  from 1 to 3 PM, $200. All materials included. This class will teach basic and intermediate drawing skills. Students will focus on character drawing and development, and will create their own, unique comic/cartoon characters. Advanced students will learn about comic page layout and design. Curious Kids: Ages 5 and 6, June 30 to July 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, $280. All material included. A hands–on environment to stimulate the young mind with activities including math, music, movement, painting, bookmaking and more. Contact: Laraine Pinnone. Contact:  larainelaraine@gmail.com

 

3-D Design and Construction: Age 8-12, July 28 to August 1, from 9AM-12 PM, $200. Using wire, paper mache, wood, card board, tools such as pliers, drills, saws, ever needles and thread, students will learn transform their 2-D ideas on paper into 3-dimensional constructions. Emphasis is on individual growth and development of imagination and skills. Class is limited to 8 students.  All materials and snacks provided. Basic Metal Work:  Age 12-16, July 28 to August 1, from 1 to 3 PM, $200. Students will use metal as medium for jewelry as well as small scale sculpture.  Techniques in sawing/piercing, sanding, texturing, filing and riveting will be taught to create unique pieces in copper, brass and nickel. There is no soldering in this class. FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

 

Travel Photography Sessions: Wednesdays, 7pm to 8pm, July 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30. Introductory offer: 5 classes: Pay for 4 classes ($40) and attend any 4 out of the 5 classes. You can take all the classes for $50.

Going away for the trip of a lifetime or just to get away? Want to bring back wonderful memories in photographs instead of snapshots? Then this class is for you. We will go over the basics as well as interesting tips & tricks for improving your photography skills while you’re on vacation.  For beginners & intermediate photographers, shooting either digital or film. Joy Yagid is a Maplewood photographer with over 30 years of experience. She has traveled extensively. Photography for Young People will be offered in the fall. These classes are subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer Scholarship Fund to support photography education. Details to follow in July.

The Lawrence Kramer Memorial Scholarship. 1978 lost a good friend this winter when photographer Larry Kramer passed away. He was an exhibitor, a participant and all around heavy lifter. His many friends and his family have established an ongoing fund to support photography education for young people. Donations may be made to Friends of Maplewood Recreation, 1978  (with a note : Lawrence Kramer Fund), 1978 Springfield Ave., Maplewood, NJ 07040.
