000_0003 Since opening, 1978 has offered a wonderful selection of art classes from beginner to advanced, for adults and children, from watercolor and sculpture to jewelry design and workshops on mask-making and pop-up books. With a kiln on premises, summertime clay workshops are offered. Classes during the year are scheduled for the fall and spring.

Classes are 8 weeks long unless specified...most classes begin the 1st week in October… some starting dates may vary so call the teachers directly. Many programs are on-going with optional starting dates.

Kids Beginner Photography Ages 10 - 15, Mondays, starting in Oct, 4:15 to 5:15 pm - 6 weeks, $75. (This class is subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer scholarship fund...normally $150). Bring a digital camera or borrow one from 1978 ($50 deposit required and refunded when the camera is returned). Students will learn camera mechanics, composition, light, depth of field in the studio. Kids Advanced Photography Ages 10 - 15, Mondays, starting in Nov, 4:15 to 5:15 pm - 5 weeks, $70. Limited 4 students. (This class is subsidized by the Lawrence Kramer scholarship fund...normally $140). Students will work on a selected project to further their skill set. The Contemporary Artists Forum:  Tuesdays at 7:00 PM, (every other Tuesday beginning Sept 14) Fee $50 for 8 sessions. The Contemporary Artists Forum is a critique group where serious artists discuss each others work and influences facing artists today. Thinking With A Pencil Wednesdays 10 to 11:30 AM. Fee  $96 for 8 sessions

Designed  to show how drawing can be put to practical use in every field from acting to zoology. This course is intended for two groups:

(1) those who wish to use drawing as a tool for thought and communication but lack knowledge of how to make drawings and  (2) those who are accustomed to draw but want to enlarge their graphic vocabularies and extend the range of fields in which they can apply the abilities that they already possess. This course will enable you to learn more rapidly, think more efficiently, and communicate more effectively. It does not depend on any computer or program. Bead for Peace  Wednesdays, from 7 to 9 PM.  This is an on-going workshop for women. Participants are welcome to one or all sessions. Fee: $12, materials $10 per session.

A project designed to support organizations and individuals who work for peace in the Middle East and beyond. The word “to bead” in Arabic and Hebrew is the same and means to bead, to rhyme & to connect. In each of the projects, two little beads in the shape of a Dove participate in the design to symbolize Peace, communication, connection and reconciliation. Sessions are on Monday evenings.

EXHIBITIONS 

Contemporary Artists Forum Exhibition IX (C.A.F.E.IX)

Sept. 12 to October 10, 2010 Opens with reception for the artists: 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The Contemporary Artists Forum is a group of 20 artists who get together two Tuesdays per month at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center to discuss and critique each others work. The group is made up of  painters, sculpters, printmakers, photographers and mixed media artists. This exhibition displays the work that was discussed during the course of the previous years critiques.

SURVIVORS: Breast Cancer Awareness

Oct. 17 to Nov. 28, 2010 Opens with reception for the artists, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Survivors: Breast Cancer Awareness is an exhibition in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and displays the work of artists whose lives have been affected by people who have survived the disease. Most of the work will be specific to the topic.
