Join B John and the 4th July Committee
to continue working on your squares
9am - 12noon at 1978 Arts Center
Check out the process so far on Maplewood Online
Remember the hoops that appeared all over Maplewood lawns last spring?
They were part of the Maplewood Fourth of July art project sponsored by 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and Post 10120 VFW Maplewood.
This year instead of circles, we are using squares.
This workshop is the kickoff event for 2013. We will fabricate frames, prepare canvas for use on the 4th of July, and distribute squares to anyone who wants one.
The goal of this recurring annual outdoor art projects is to channel / focus energy from all over the community over a period of time - and then on the 4th bring it to fruition as a work of art.
In a way the project is a “play” on the concepts of time and space and a stretch of the word “spontaneity”. The squares are like pixels and they will form the walls of an ephemeral gallery that will ”live” a day or two, in July, in Maplewood Memorial Park.
May 19th 12-5pm

In conjunction with the 1/4 Mile Print Show: A Family Affair now on exhibit at 1978 Maplewood Arts Center, Steve McKenzie and 1978 Maplewood Arts Center presents a local outdoor printing event as part of the May Fest Celebration on Springfield Avenue on May 19, 2013 between 12 pm and 5pm. This time the print will be 100 feet in length and visitors will be able to paint directly on the prepared plastic and then have their painting printed on sheets of paper, which they can take away with them for free. The prints will be pressed with a double drum roller (“steam roller”) after the paintings have been completed. It is fun! It is art! It is 1978!
